History
Lt. Thomas Leffingwell was a member of the founding families in Norwich and bought the Inn from Steven Backus in 1675.
The tavern descended to Christopher Leffingwell who was a prominent industrialist of his day. He built five small mills manufacturing products such as fulling, chocolate, grist, and paper and stocking mills. These were built along the Yantic River, harnessing its water power.
With Christopher Leffingwell’s entrepreneurial skills and business connections he was invaluable as a supplier of provisions for the Revolutionary forces including Benedict Arnold’s excursion to Ft. Ticonderoga in 1775.
Besides industry the Leffingwell home also hosted English clock maker, Thomas Harland, who repaid the family with several tall clocks still on exhibit today. A collection of fine silver form local silversmith Joseph Carpenter and children's toys can be viewed in this interesting history-filled home.
